The ST segment is a specific area on a patient’s ECG. Identification of its rise is very important for the further management of a patient with a heart attack. Incomplete restriction of blood flow to the site of the heart characterizes unstable angina, which can lead to non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Complete and sudden occlusion (contraction) of a coronary artery is usually associated with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
