About clinic

A multidisciplinary clinic at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, ranked among the best both in Germany and worldwide. In the ranking for Germany, in ranks first, in the European — 9th, in the world — 30th. The university of Munich runs numerous clinical trials, and our clinic benefits from the latest scientific insights. Over 50 000 patients are treated here every year. There are 950 employees in 25 departments of the clinic, including 78 doctors of medicine, 4 professors, 8 private docents. At Helios Munich West, patients receive a full cycle of treatment — from the first consultation to rehabilitation. The hospital specializes in the treatment of heart diseases, gastroenterology and oncology. But also for other diseases, the recovery rate at the hospital is above the average. For example, in 2018, all 22 colon removal operations in cancer and 108 intestinal hernias removal operations were successful, that is, with 0% mortality. In 2018, the doctors of the clinic performed 331 vascular surgeries (including high-risk procedures on gangrene and abdominal aortic aneurysm patients) with no mortalities. 100% of uterine removal surgeries were performed successfully.

I had a planned caesarean last week at Helios. Obviously it is not the hospital that most of the pregnant women in Munich would choose. I think Großhadern nearby would be a much popular choice. But for me the story is different. First, I had a small operation here previously with Dr Mosner. He was brilliant and the recovery was incredibly fast. Second, when I visit their Kreißsaal team two months before the birth, I was impressed by Hebamme Frau Baumgartner, she speaks accent-free English and was super warm and accommodating. Third, comparing to big hospitals that specialise in giving birth (LMU-Frauenklinik, Frauenklinik Dr. Geisenhofer, Klinikum Dritter Orden) Personally I prefer smaller hospitals where it is much calmer and less chaotic and every time I visit Helios I cannot hear any traumatic screaming or moaning from the labour ward, only occasionally I hear baby crying. My operation was with Dr Herrmann, she was warm and friendly. The operation went well and I spent one night at the normal room and three nights at the family room. During that time, I have met many different nurses and Hebamme, most of them were caring and nice, except one who insisted giving me a shower and as a result I passed out in the bathroom. But I don’t blame her too much, after all she did from a good intention, just a bit ignorant. I was particularly impressed by the breastfeeding expert hebamme Frau Neumann, she was attentive and competent. She spent a long time with us explaining different techniques of how to increase breastfeeding and organised a pump for me right away. Since I gave birth to my first child in London, I truly feel the difference between German medical care and NHS. The hospital has almost everything that you need for the baby and breastfeeding. Pump, nursing pad, nipple soothing gel, pampers, milk bottles, wipes, aptamil formulas, bodies, sleeping bag (see pics) you name one, and I bet they will have it in storage. And most of the nurses are very generous. I am amazed and thinking back my time in Chelsea and Westminster hospital where I had to share a hot steamy room with five other new mums (and dads and babies)….. and no midwife offers me a bottle of formula when I couldn’t provide not a single drop for my baby after two days she lost so much weight….it was madness On the other side, I also understand why a lot of people gave bad reviews to Helios, their ground floor registration desks are notorious for its long waiting time. We waited for almost two hours to register our child’e birth and for meeting the anaesthetist before we waited one hour. The food for the family room was quite good but you have to order one day before which was impossible when you just moved in, so we missed out for two days.(still have to pay) And the service lady is incredibly stubborn, we told her at least 4 times that we don’t eat cheese but she seemed never giving up…. Anyway, it is a shame such excellent doctors and medical care have been hold back by very basic services. Hopefully this will change in the future.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the hospital for a broken arm. The emergency service was efficient and the emergency doctors were really helpful. They answered all my questions, provided clear instructions and helped me understand the situation. All procedures in the hospital took 2 hours (waiting, the first check, x-ray, and then putting my arm in plaster). I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the nurses at the emergency registration desk. They made a difficult situation much more manageable and I am very grateful for all their efforts. I would also like to request the owner of the hospital to pass on my thanks to the nurses (working on 26.01.2023 between 15:00-17:00). They deserve recognition for their work and I hope they continue to provide the same level of care to all their patients. Overall, I had a positive experience (except my arm was broken😄) at the hospital. Thank you!
