The institution became a hospital in the modern sense in 1919. After the outbreak of World War I, he nursed the wounded on 156 beds: he gave many soldiers the hope of returning to civilian life, of returning to work again. After the World War, a new X-ray institute was established in it, and in 1923 - following another fundraiser - half a decade of reconstruction began in it, during which, among other things, a nerve department was established, and the ophthalmology and laryngeal departments were rebuilt. The institution received its present neurosurgical profile in 1954. By this time, he was already performing his healing work as the National Institute of Neurosurgery Sciences. In 2003, the modern wing of the outpatient clinic was expanded, and a large-scale reconstruction is currently underway in the monumental building. OKITI is now a stronghold of neurosciences. It is no longer just the leading neuroscience institution in Hungary, but it is one of the three largest neurosurgery centres in Europe. For many people with brain and spine disease, epilepsy and stroke, it is synonymous with a chance of recovery. It is available to those who want to recover in a cultured environment, with highly skilled doctors, good technical equipment and helpful staff. In the courtyard is a shady garden with trees, a walkway, an ornamental well, benches. This is the place where, in addition to healing and hope, the understanding and love that resides here from the beginning are also there in every corner.
